 Trowbridge In Bloom

Congratulations to all those businesses, organisations, schools, churches and individuals who have contributed to Trowbridge winning a GOLD Award in the South West in Bloom Regional Finals. This is a great accolade for the town, especially as we find ourselves competing against other large towns such as Exmouth, Portishead and Newquay. Not only has the number of adults and children entering in the very diverse competitions increased, but Trowbridge in Bloom is rapidly expanding into different areas of the community, forming new partnerships and strengthening links with education. Despite the inclement weather we have experienced this year, the judges were overwhelmed not only with the high standard of floral displays, but the pride shown by all entrants. The Primary Schools’ achievements for 2012 were celebrated at the Civic Centre on the 25th September, followed by the Adults Awards. Both were very successful events, with North Bradley Primary School giving a presentation on their ‘Buddy Scheme’, and Paxcroft Primary School on ‘The Great Outdoors’. Sincere thanks also to outstanding musical presentations from students at St Augustine’s Catholic College and the Clarendon College.

As Britain in Bloom is requesting more links to the curriculum, one of our new initiatives this year has been the 'Little Bloomers' public speaking competition. This will take place again next year on Wednesday 12th June kindly hosted by this year’s winners, The Grove Primary School. Another exciting and unique initiative will take place at the Spectrum, the Clarendon College on Monday 4th February 2013. The three secondary schools, Clarendon College, John of Gaunt School and St Augustine's Catholic College will come together in the spirit of friendly competition to launch 'Young Voice of Trowbridge', the first time the schools have come together in competition and a first for Britain in Bloom.

As ever, I would like to acknowledge the splendid work of my dedicated committee.

I personally feel very privileged to have such a wonderful team who have supported me throughout the year, and I know will continue to look forward to an even more successful 2013.

South West in Bloom 2012

Town Clerk Lance Allan and Neighbourhoods Officer Nick Allford

Following on from the success of SWiB 2011, which saw Trowbridge scoop a Gold Award in the St Bridget Cup class for larger towns, members of the Friends of Trowbridge in Bloom Committee  worked hard to go one better this year . . .
Once again this year, Trowbridge In Bloom proved to be a popular event in and around the town, with all participants and entrants hoping that their efforts would be well worth all their hard work throughout the year including, two new categories for churches and licensed premises.
However, the first round of judging took place on 5th July, and this   involved the town’s entry in South West in Bloom 2012, including 21 community  entries in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ section. Following on from our Gold Award in this competition in 2011, the judging panel were escorted throughout the town, and some very encouraging comments were made along the way . . . and now we are pleased to announce that Trowbridge scooped a second consecutive Gold at the SWiB awards, held in Weston-super-Mare on Thursday 20th September!

Over the following two days, the judging of the Residential categories of Trowbridge in Bloom delighted the panel, with a standard that as usual was truly second-to-none! Local traders had also played their part in the ‘Pride in Business’ category, and in recognition were each presented with a certificate by the Mayor, Councillor John Knight and President of Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce, David Baker.

Despite the ever-changing weather, once again the ‘Open Gardens’ weekend proved as popular as it has always been, visitors enjoying the high standard of entries, and of course the Mayor’s Charities benefited from the generous donations collected by all involved. Several associations in and around the town participated in the Allotment class this year, and again the competition was very strong. Additionally, the Schools category seems to gain popularity every year.
So, the big question is ‘Who were the winners’? The full results can be seen by clicking on
TiB. Below are two of the entries for the Art & Sculpture competition.

With the completion of the new Civic Centre in Trowbridge Park in December 2011, a small orchard  was planted in the landscaped area to the rear of the Centre. Trees were planted in memory of Martin Askey, a former member of the Friends of the Biss Meadows Country Park, who sadly died last year.

Sponsorship Opportunities

There are many ways for companies to promote their business around the town working in partnership with the "Friends of Trowbridge In Bloom"

Various flower beds around the town and on roundabouts give you the opportunity to sponsor with your business logo and contact details in prominent positions and with high volumes of passing traffic. Currently priced at £250 per annum for a single sign, and with deals available for multiple signs.

Last year, over 200 hanging baskets went up on lamp columns, and on business premises, within the Town Centre area. This resulted in a remarkable floral display for every one to see. If your town centre business would like to be part of this every summer then we offer each hanging basket complete with daily watering and feeding for £50 per basket. These baskets are not like the ones you buy in the local DIY store!

If you would like to take up either of the offers, or even offer sponsorship to an award which is given every year to local schools, community and town centre businesses please contact Nick Allford
