Trowbridge Carnival & Soapbox Derby

Trowbridge came alive with the Carnival Spirit on Sat 22 October. The weather was perfect – slightly chilly so we could warm up as the large floats went by with all the light bulbs blazing!

This year we were lucky to have 4 marching bands  - Dolphin Marching Band from Poole, Oisambistas, Southern Jacobites Pipe Band and the local Wiltshire Youth Marching Band.
The Procession wound through town with floats, dance troupes, individual masqueraders and bands all delighting the crowds.
Many thanks must go to all the volunteers who turned out to ensure the success of the Carnival in particular the stewards and bucket collectors.

Trowbridge Carnival AGM will be on Wed 18 January at Roundstone School, Polebarn Road, Trowbridge at 7pm so please come along to hear what has been happening this year – perhaps you might like to get involved?

A warm welcome awaits everyone.

Trowbridge Carnival Committee is made up of volunteers from the town and surrounding areas who work hard to provide family entertainment throughout the Carnival season.

Trowbridge is the penultimate Carnival on the Wessex Grand Prix Carnival circuit and this year the crowds turned out in force to watch the largest procession for years wind around the town.

The Carnival year started in April with the selection of our Royalty which this year took place at the Arc Theatre. The judges had a very difficult afternoon which finally ended with Phoebe Lester selected as Carnival Buttterfly Queen and Xena Davies as Carnival Butterfly Princess. These young ladies have gone on to attend many events representing the Carnival very successfully.

Sunday the 22nd of August saw thrills and spills in Castle Street, Trowbridge with the now renowned Soap Box Derby. People come from near and far to take part in this Formula 1 Grand Prix we were amazed to have "The Stig???" visit the track on his way to another engagement. The morning was full of fun and laughter with Dads taking part alongside their younger sons and daughters.

On Saturday the 4th of September the Carnival Committee held the Country Fayre and Boot Sale in Trowbridge Park with music, stalls, fairground rides and displays.

Sunday the 5th of September saw the Bowls Competition in full swing in the Park this is a relatively new event in the calendar but gathering in strength year by year.

The Carnival Quiz organised by the Wessex Mead Rotary was held at the Polish Club, Waterworks Road, Trowbridge mid October with teams scratching their brains for the answers to questions set before enjoying a fish and chip supper, which was enjoyed by all who took part.

Saturday the 23rd of October was the first "dark???" Carnival in Trowbridge's history with a record fifty seven entries. Several of the large illuminated floats from the Wessex Circuit were able to take part since we had moved from September to October. This was the highlight of the year with approximately 13,000 people taking to the streets to celebrate the spirit of Carnival.

The beneficiaries this year are Urban Dance and St George's Luncheon Club. If your club or organisation would like to be considered for funding please get in touch with the Committee in April/May telling us about your organisation and why you would like a donation from us?

The Carnival Committee meet the third Wednesday of each month, 7pm at Roundstone Preparatory School, Polebarn Road, Trowbridge. We would appreciate help from anyone with a few hours to spare please contact Maryrose Mantle (Chairman) on 01225 711097 or  07866698278 or maryrose@trowbridge.gov.uk  for further details.

Armed Forces Event

2010 Saw the 4th annual Celebrations in Trowbridge Park with displays, demonstrations, music and activities on Sat 26 and Sun 27 June.

The Government has chosen the last Saturday of June each year as Armed Forces Day. This is an opportunity to show support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community , and includes current serving personnel with their families, Veterans and the Cadet Forces.

The weekend aimed to raise awareness of and support for the Armed Forces and highlight the outstanding contribution it makes to this country.

The independent committee made up of serving and retired military personnel, veterans and enthusiasts meet regularly to plan, organise and deliver a safe, informative, fun weekend where memories are brought and taken away.

Trowbridge saw the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (including the Spitfire which was made in the town during WW2), Hercules, Chipmunk and helicopters fly in the blue, cloudless sky above the Park. On the ground were displays from the Navy, Army and RAF as well as their related veteran groups. Music was provided by The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines who lead the Parade of Standards and Drumhead Service on the Sunday. 2010 Co-incided with the 150th anniversary of the Cadets who gave a stunning display of teamwork and skill with the Field Gun Crew races. The 'living history' groups showed us equipment and the way of life from various countries in the different conflicts through the years.

Saturday evening saw live entertainment on the Bandstand with The Manhattan Dolls (a trio of young ladies from New York) and Company B (a versatile family show depicting scenes from WW2 at home).

With over 9,000 people present at the Celebrations 2010 has set a high standard to follow but the Committee are well on the way to planning another very successful show. Make time to look at the website www.bafvc.org.uk to keep up with the news.

Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2011- book it in your diary now.
