The Gallimarkt is a traditional festival celebrated annually in Leer-Ostfriesland, Trowbridge’s twin town in Germany. With its origins over 500 years ago as a cattle market, it has grown into a very successful event, bringing many visitors from near and far, including its neighbours from Holland.
Trowbridge Town Crier Trevor Heeks is invited every year to officially open the Gallimarkt along with the other Leer herolds, standing on the steps of the Town Hall and giving his usual cry of ‘God Save the Queen’! Trevor is much loved by the people of Leer and many have said that the event wouldn’t be the same without him.
The Mayor of Trowbridge, Cllr. Deborah Halik is also visiting Leer this week with her husband, Cllr. David Halik.
