Local couple Steve and Bron Phillips were all ready for their Civil Partnership ceremony at County Hall, in October. However, a couple of days prior to the big day, they were disappointed to learn that one of their witnesses was unable to attend . . . So they contacted Trowbridge Town Council, and asked, as they were ‘tying the knot’ in Trowbridge, whether the town’s mascot Trowbridge Ted might be able to help out. As Ted hadn’t been overly busy since the onset of Coronavirus (he’d had a sort of extended hibernation period), he was only to happy to help. The happy couple were so pleased that he was able to oblige, and said it certainly added a surreal feeling to the day . . .

When asked for a comment, Ted said “2020 was getting to be a struggle for me, I have to admit – when you’re a large mammal, you need to keep active, and although the idea of an extended hibernation was appealing, I was so happy when I was invited to be a witness at Steve and Bron’s civil partnership – I couldn’t ‘bear’ the thought of their special day having to be cancelled. I had a bit of a struggle signing the registration document, though – usually I just leave a paw-print. I wish them all the best for the future, and hope they’re soon going to be raising some cubs.”
