We all know that Christmas is going to be very different this year, but Trowbridge has still managed to enter into the spirit by hosting its traditional Christmas Lights Switch-On, however in a virtual way . . .
The big yellow button was pressed by Town Crier Trevor Heeks (unbelievably, his first time in almost 40 years in his role), illuminating the town park and the streets around the town centre, not forgetting the magnificent Christmas tree in its usual position in Fore Street . . . We’re just sorry that you all couldn’t be there this year. However, you can relive the occasion (again and again if you like!), as we’ve made a video so no-one has to miss out – you’ll be able to watch it by clicking this link.
Continuing the Christmas theme (as one does this time of year . . .), have you heard about Window Wanderland, which is lighting up the town by encouraging homes and businesses to decorate or illuminate their windows – why not wrap up warm, and take a seasonal stroll and enjoy this wonderful way of marking and celebrating the festive season? Find out more here . . .
I would like to advise how disappointed we are with the Christmas lights in the town this year. The sheer lack of effort is so upsetting in such an unprecedented year. Trowbridge should be shining a light for hope.
We walked through the town at 5.15pm to see no lights at all through the high street and the Christmas tree looked miserable also not lit. WHY?
We were very grateful for the lights around the town hall, but the lack of illumination throughout the rest of silver street and wicker hill dampened the whole town.
Please can you explain why it’s so poor this year.
Sorry about the delay, but we did respond to you on Facebook: Thank you for your feedback and we’re sorry that you don’t like the Christmas lights this year.
The only place that doesn’t have lights this year is Wicker Hill, the high street and park all have lights that go on at 4pm. If they weren’t on when you walked through the high street there may be a technical problem so thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Our focus for this very strange year has been to try to engage with residents and businesses, and to bring some much needed festive cheer to the town. By offering free lantern making kits and setting up a new town wide event – Window Wanderland, we have allowed everyone to play a part in the Christmas season celebrations in Trowbridge.
We hope you have a great Christmas.
