It’s long been a popular feature of Trowbridge Park, and has provided a home for a wide range of waterfowl and other wild life, as well as a place for families to enjoy. Now, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Water Team are planning to give our town pond a wildlife- and people-friendly make-over.
Please watch the presentation at the link below and send your feedback to NickW@wiltshirewildlife.org.
I regularly go there with my two children age 5 and 2 as do my parents, my father is registered blind. I would like to see outdoor seating (benches, seats etc) and a safe area where people can view the ducks & feed them. As the area is on a slope perhaps staggered platforms going down to the pond alongside accessible paths for buggies, wheelchairs etc? And more vegetation and water for the ducks and to encourage more wildlife. The current pond area is very hidden from view and I feel needs to be opened up.

Hi Louise, thank you for your comments these will be fed into the design process. We want to make the pond a more accessible and inviting place for both people and the local wildlife. We’re looking at the potential to open new wheelchair friendly footpaths around the pond and the installation benches as well as investigating the best way to encourage more wildlife through planting and improving habitat. A duck feeding area is also being built into the design. Thank you for your comments and I’m more than happy to talk about this further – just email me on nickw@wiltshirewildlife.org.

This is a great idea and well overdue.
There needs to be more seating areas for families to enjoy
Also there is always signs saying not to feed bread to the ducks. Currently the food is available from civic centre which is closed. Maybe there could be a vending point for duck friendly snacks.
Is the waste river water going to be redirected and often it’s full of rats and rubbish and smells.

Hi Ian, yes there does need to be more seating area and we’re building that into the design. The same is true with the duck food, we’re still in the early stages of development at the moment and are looking at alternatives to the current setup which does include vending stations. I do not yet know how this will progress but it is a high priority of the project. With regards to water quality, improving this is the main driver behind the project – we’re looking at the best way to do this. Thank you for your comments and I’m more than happy to talk about this further – just email me on nickw@wiltshirewildlife.org.

The pond at the moment is not a healthy environment. Watching the torrent of water rushing down the channel after the rain and seeing the footpath flooded behind the cinema, how will that be managed. I am all for a more natural more accessible pond .

Gill Newbury – Hi Gill, So glad to hear that you’re all for a more natural, accessible pond as that’s exactly what we’re looking to do. We’re still in the early stages of development at the moment but we’re looking at how a small amount of flood attenuation can be built into the design – rivers will always flood and it’s about slowing the flow and letting them flood in the right places by working with natural processes. Thank you for your comments and I’m more than happy to talk about this further – just email me on nickw@wiltshirewildlife.org.

The pond area of the park is frequently visited by lots of residents and the ducks morhens swans seagulls and rats a source of interest to old and young
The worst problem is the rubbish it has accumulated and that the water drains away too easily. So please spend any funds on cleaning it up , keeping it clean and maintaining the water level. It is surrounded by mature trees and natural vegetation. The ducks and moorhens have lots of ducklings each year as a regular visitor will tell you . I am not sure a redesign will help. We have the Biss meadow for more nature.
