To her friends, Halla (Halldóra Geirharõsdóttir) leads a quiet and routine life. But her happy and upbeat exterior hides a secret double life as a committed environmental activist. Known to others as “The Mountain Woman”, she wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry to protect the stunning highland landscape that is under threat.
Just as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that will change everything. Her application to adopt a child has finally been accepted and there is a little girl waiting for her in Ukraine. She will be forced to choose between her environmental crusade and the chance of fulfilling her dream of becoming a mother. Funny, moving and utterly unique, Woman at War, follows Halla as she juggles the adoption of a little girl whilst planning her final act of industrial sabotage.
Benedikt Erlingsson is an Icelandic director, author and actor. His first feature film, Of Horses and Men, won over 20 international awards. Woman at War was premiered at Cannes Film Festival, 2018 and was presented the same year at Toronto International Film Festival. Appart of being a film on “nature rights”, the director also highlights the music as an important part of the film “Our film is a hero’s tale. Our hero is a musician. The hero is saving the world. The film has music. The musicians performing the music are visible. They are the inner forces that are battling within the hero’s soul”.
★★★★ “Woman at War is a huge showcase for Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, who brings grit, determination, and quiet charisma to every scene. An engaging curiosity and an absolute joy” – The Irish Times
